😱 The gem has fallen off!
Don't panic, here's what to do
Your dental gem has fallen off? This is normal and it happens!
It's not serious and doesn't mean the application was done poorly.
✅ What to do immediately?
Retrieve the gem if possible. Check that it's not damaged (scratched, broken). If it's intact, it can be reattached!
Store it safely in a small bag or box. Avoid putting it loose in a pocket where it could get scratched.
Contact your practitioner to make an appointment and have the gem reattached.
🚫 What NOT to do
- Don't try to reattach it yourself with super glue or other commercial adhesives. These glues are toxic and not suitable for oral use!
- Don't scrape adhesive residue off the tooth with a sharp object
- Don't swallow the gem (if accidentally swallowed, don't worry, it will be naturally eliminated)
🤔 Why did my gem fall off?
Several reasons can explain why a gem falls off:
Hard foods - You bit into something hard (apple, ice, candy)
Moisture during application - If the tooth wasn't perfectly dry during application
Bruxism - Teeth grinding during sleep
Natural wear - After several months/years, it's normal
Manipulation - Playing with the gem with your tongue or fingers
🔄 Can the same gem be reattached?
Yes, in most cases!
If the gem is intact (not scratched or broken), your practitioner can reattach it. They will first clean the adhesive residue from both the tooth and the gem, then proceed with a new application.
Reattachment takes the same time as an initial application (about 15-20 minutes) and generally costs less since you already have the jewelry.
👩⚕️ Are you a professional?
Here's how to handle a reattachment:
- Clean composite residue from the tooth with a polishing bur
- If the client has kept the gem, clean it as well
- Proceed with a new application following the usual protocol
- Remind them of care instructions to prevent another fall
